About Life 3:23

It’s easy to put our best effort into something we love. I’ve always loved sports, and it never took much prodding from my coaches to get me to play as hard as I could. My Language Arts teachers, on the other hand, had their work cut out for them. Despite heroic efforts to motivate me, I’m afraid I often didn’t put 100 percent into my writing assignments. But that’s not how it’s supposed to be.

In Colossians 3:23 God tells us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,” (NIV). He doesn’t say, “do your best when it’s something you want to do.”   He doesn’t tell us to “give it 100 percent when it’s something you like.” He doesn’t direct us to “give it your all when it will make you look good.” Nope. He simply tells us to work with all of our heart at whatever we do…at our jobs….at our schools…at our church…in our community…everywhere…everything…as if we are doing it for Him.

The phrase Life 3:23 serves as a personal reminder that I should put my best into everything I do. No matter how small or how large. No matter how much I want, or don’t want, to do it. Realistically, I fail to meet this standard daily…but that standard is my goal. God expects me to work as if I’m working directly for Him. Life according to 3:23…
