Shout! It doesn’t say “quietly and respectfully speak” joy. It doesn’t say “whisper reverently” joy. No, this psalm encourages everyone throughout the entire earth to shout for joy to the LORD! The Hebrew word translated as “shout” here is rua (pronounced roo-ah’). It means to jubilantly yell out or raise a battle cry like an excited crowd might do as they welcome their king. Every weekend millions of us stand and cheer at the top of our lungs for our favorite sports team…that’s how excited we should be to shout for joy to our LORD!
This is a beautiful psalm that inspired many of the praises we sing. Let’s close with Psalm 100 (NIV) in its entirety…
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
