Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. – Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. – Proverbs 16:3 (KJV)
52 Proverbs in 52 Weeks – Week 13
This week’s theme: Trusting God’s Plan
Simple question: Who do you work for?
Whether we’re young or “experienced,” we all have tasks we accomplish every day.
Kids: When you do your homework, when you practice sports, when you do chores around the house, when you’re kind to a shy student, when you play or “hang out” with friends, when you update your Snapchat story…who are you doing it for? Your teacher? Your coach? Your parents? Your friends? Yourself? …
“Experienced” folks: When you’re diligent at your job, when you work at home, when you shuttle your kids from place to place, when you help others in your community, when you pay your bills, when you’re kind to a neighbor…who are you serving? Your boss? Your company? Your children? Your spouse? Your community? …
Proverbs 16:3 tells us what the answer to every one of those questions should be: we should do all of these things for our LORD. “Commit to the LORD whatever you do…,” and oh what a difference that mindset should make. Here are two quick ways:
1. Would you work harder on a project you’re doing for God than a project you’re doing for someone you might not even get along with? It shouldn’t make a difference, but it often does when dealing with our human (and sinful) nature. The quality of our work will improve if we do everything for our God.
2. By committing what we do to our LORD, we’re acknowledging that His plans take priority over our plans and we’re putting our trust in Him. He planned out and created the universe…I think it’s safe to say that His plan for our lives is better than any plan we can come up with.
It’s great to serve our God in our church ministries and we should encourage each other to do so. But let’s not miss the tremendous opportunity we have to honor our LORD in every single thing that we do. Colossians 3:23, the verse that inspired the name for this website, is a perfect complement to Proverbs 16:3, so let’s close with it here:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,” Colossians 3:23 (NIV)
Everything we do, we do for our God.
