Obey Your Parents – Ephesians 6:1 (Week 43)

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. – Ephesians 6:1 (NIV)

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. – Ephesians 6:1 (KJV)

Theme:  God’s Guidance for Families

God, the Creator of all things, designed the family. And His Word outlines the basic responsibilities for Godly parents and children. Parents are expected to teach, protect, discipline, and provide for their children while raising them to honor our Heavenly Father (see last week’s post: Start Children Off). In return, children are commanded to “Honor your father and your mother…” (see the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20). One way to honor our parents is through obedience.

Our verse for this week, Ephesians 6:1, makes it clear that God expects children to obey the Godly instructions of their parents. Of course, anyone who’s worked with children knows that one of their favorite questions is:  “Why?” Why does God want us to obey our parents? Ephesians 6 verses 2 and 3 provide the answer:  He wants what’s best for His children and He wants us to “enjoy a long life on the earth.” Let’s close with all three verses together…
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” – Ephesians 6:1-3 (NIV)
