Last week’s verse, Psalms 121:1, left us with a question: “where does my help come from?” Psalms 121:2 provides the answer: “My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

In good times and bad, there are many places we turn to for comfort and encouragement — family, friends, communities, churches, support groups, hobbies, sports, favorite activities, etc. These sources of support are wonderful blessings and we should be thankful for them. However, Psalm 121:1-2 is a reminder to lift our eyes above the people and things of this earth and look to the ultimate source of support — the one and only “Maker of heaven and earth.” He created the very universe we live in and everything that it contains. He can provide all of the help we could ever need.

And just to carry the historical aspect with regard to our nation one step further, the resolution adopted by Congress actually urged President Washington to declare “a national day of thanksgiving and prayer” (emphasis supplied), but in today’s times we seem to forget that second part. In fact, the very first line of President Washington’s proclamation establishing our nation’s first Thanksgiving states “Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor...” The full text of the proclamation is available at: https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/05-04-02-0091 Our Founding Fathers recognized and gave thanks to God above all first and foremost, and we would be well-served to do the same!
