God’s Life Hack: Know Where to Run
Have you ever thought about the things that make us feel safe? Locks on our doors. The comforting arms of a parent. Police officers at a large event. A friend to stand by our side during a tough time. A night light in a dark room…
In Solomon’s day one of the things that made people feel safe was a wall around their city. The image above, for example, is a picture of the wall around the old city of Jerusalem…much as it was thousands of years ago. Such walls were equipped with strong gates to keep enemies out and towers to help protect the walls and gates. If enemies tried to break through a gate or scale a wall, soldiers in the tower could throw stones or shoot arrows at the attackers from protected positions. Often the safest place to be within the city was a fortified tower, so that was the place to run in times of danger.
As we come to the final two weeks of our “year of Proverbs,” this verse is a great reminder of where true strength and safety is found — with our God. And unlike man-made walls and towers that will eventually fall, our God is the source of strength that reigns eternal. He is the ultimate fortified tower. We should run to him.
