My cousin Joe is now the worship pastor for large church in Texas, but one of my favorite memories of him is from when he was about three years old. Joe, my sister and I were playing at a park and Joe was walking through the park singing “This is the day…this is the day…that the Lord has made….that the Lord has made…I will rejoice…I will rejoice…and be glad in it…and be glad in it…” What a happy heart.
Psalms 118 kicks off in verse 1 with “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.” Amen! Every day is a blessing from God and we should definitely give thanks and rejoice. Verse 24, however, says “the LORD has done it this very day” (NIV) and seems to be referring to something specific. What is “it” and what special “day” is the Psalmist referring to? Verses 22 and 23 point to the answer:
22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;
23 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. (NIV)
So when verse 24 declares “The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad,” the Psalmist is rejoicing that God delivered Israel (the stone rejected) from its enemies. But this passage applies to us today as well…let’s look at Acts 4:11-12:
11 Jesus is “the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.”
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. (NIV)
God offers us salvation through Jesus…it’s available to us “this very day”…let’s “rejoice today and be glad!”
