So that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:17 (NIV)
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. – 2 Timothy 3:17 (KJV)
Theme: God’s Word and Why We Study It
This verse completes the thought from Week 3 (our family memorizes Weeks 3 & 4 together). Last week, 2 Timothy 3:16 reminded us that the Bible we read is inspired by God Himself, and we should use His Scriptures to teach one another, to identify and correct what is wrong (sin), and to train ourselves to do what’s right in God’s eyes. Why should we use God’s Word for these things? This week’s verse, 2 Timothy 3:17, tells us: so that our hearts and minds are “thoroughly equipped” to do good works in the eyes of our LORD. Just like a soldier must be properly trained and equipped before heading into battle, we need to equip ourselves with God’s Word as we head out into the world. Why? So that we’re thoroughly equipped to do good works for God’s glory.
